This week Amy and Bu has graciously opened their Hale to our Kanikapila. Details are as follows:

Start at 7:30 PM
Run until 10:30 PM
Bring Food
BYOG - Bring Your Own Gear (including a chair, just in case, and a music stand)
Bu has requested that we hold a ‘Go Round The Circle’ style of Kanikapila this time around. We ask that when it comes your turn to lead, you either pick a song from one of the Flight Manuals, or bring a song to share (and enough copies for everyone) with the group.
Assist with clean up after (if you can’t stay to help with clean up please do pickup after yourselves)

Mahalo Nui Loa to all of you for making last week’s Kanikapila at Bogie’s Café so action packed and so much fun! A special Mahalo to Leslie and Michael for opening Bogie’s to the UFOhana and a big thanks to all that helped with the clean up in the after math. Leslie was so impressed and thankful that she had very little to do after the jam that she’s invited us back again next month. Stay tuned for details. Btw, if anyone hears of a venue in the area for our Kanikapila please do send the info my way.

And of course there were your requisite fire breathing Dragon Mobile, human powered vehicles, articulate electric trike, 100% electric ‘Sun Racer’ and your typical Hover Craft Delorean . . . just another display at the Geek-dom!

Oh, yeah, they had lots of robots and flying vehicles too . . . heaven . . .

This week Bogie’s Café has kindly offered to allow the UFOhana to hold Kanikapila Night at their venue. Located at 48 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael.

Bogie’s WILL NOT be providing food. We will be starting at 6:30PM running till 10:00ish. I’m posting maps below:

Week 18: We’re back at the Clubhouse . . .

Week 17: Meanwhile back at Hangar 1585 . . .

Well it looks we’re back to Friday Night at 1585 Vendola this week . . .

However, I want to extend a Mahalo Nui to all of you that made last Friday at Ke La Puha Hui Hale (The Sunny Hill Club House) so much fun. You brought some much warmth and fun not just the Club House but I understand that someone actually made some complementary comments about the music to the complex manager. Again Mahalo Nui Loa to those of you that brought your Aloha, Mele, Kaukau and Kala ($$$) donations that night. I’m told that we’ve been invited back May 4th at the apartment complex and also to perform at the Marin Arts Festival . . . stay tuned for more details.

Then we had more of the same the following day at Wahine Moe Moe (Sleeping Lady) . . .

As David Lettermen once said, “More fun than Humanly Possible!” All because of a “Little Stick of Wood”. an Amazing Ohana . . .

Btw, Sandy and I will be out on an Away Mission to Clear Lake this Saturday so we’ll be MIA for Sleepy Lady this week. However, Kimo, KimoB, Keo and Rick will keep the strum going in our absence.

I’ve also had a few requests to re-bind the Flight Manuals into one book. If you want yours done, bring them to me and I will re-bind them for just the cost of materials, $5, which includes clear plastic covers.

And speaking of Flight Manuals, we are starting to compile songs for Volume 3 Flight Manual. Please feel free to email me songs you like included. If possible send it as a .DOC or .PDF file to ease the time in reformatting them in Publisher.

Week 16: Ukulele Night Relocated to 101 Sunny Hills Dr., San Anselmo

This Friday (4/20) we will be holding Uke Night at The Clubhouse at 101 Sunnyhills Drive, San Anselmo (located in the Parkside Apartments behind Red Hill Shopping Center). We’re Starting it at 6:30PM INSTEAD OF 7:30PM because of a 10:00PM Sound Curfew. So we decided to start an hour earlier (6:30PM).

The photo below indicates where the Clubhouse (Red Box) is in relation to 101 Sunnyhills Dr., just follow the red lines up the drive way to the Club House. Mahalo nui loa to Linda for donating the use of the facilities. The yellow line indicates available street parking. If needed, further up the road from the yellow line is a good size parking lot.

We should have enough chairs but just in case you may want to bring a folding one. Bring your music stand, I am bringing some extra floor lamps, but just in case you may want to bring a music light if you have one.

Please post your incoming rations for this Friday to this site. Mahalo to Marion for donating the paper goods and plastic ware for this week’s kanikapila. We’re in need of refreshments so if someone could bring some that would be great. There’s a full size refrigerator in the facility, but no kitchen (i.e. cooking range). There are bathrooms (a his and hers!).

Week 15: Houston . . . .

Just a quick note that we will be holding this week’s (for this week only!) Kanikapila at Kimo Ayres Home. Once again, No Drinks or Dining on the carpeted areas, do your own dishes, just like at Hangar 1585. Bring your own music stand and a folding chair. Mahalo Kimo and Family for allowing us in!

You should have received an email with his address but just in case email me at UFOSqL@Kahua51.org and I will send you his address. If not I will have maps to his home pasted on the front door of Hangar 1585.

Also happening, this Saturday, March 31st, Bogie’s Café will be sponsoring a ‘Hawaiian Open Mic Night’, from 6:30p to 10:30p. Michael will be cooking up some local kine grinds, like Loco Moco (Marin Style?) and the like. There will be a charge for dinner, which will also pays the cover. Well the swelling has gone down and I no longer look like a bad imitation of Don Corlioni . . . I just look bad now.

So I just found out that this Friday, 155 years ago, the first Elevator was installed . . . ok, so no relation to Ukulele but I’m sure there is music out there about Elevators? “What goes up . . . must come down . . . “ you know la’ dat.

Sorry, it’s the pain killers, they’re affecting my normally finely honed sense of humor . . . !

Mahalo Nui Loa again to all that brought their Aloha, onolicious kau kau, made donations ($$$), and shared their wonderful mele last week. It surely took my mind of the Wisdom extraction!

Btw, welcome home Amy and Brudda Bu. Hope you’ll be joining us this Friday.

Week 11: 1st Week of Year 13 for the Ukulele Friends Ohana

Ukulele Event Notice:

Bogie’s Café will be holding a HAWAIIAN OPEN MIC NIGHT! March 31st,Saturday.

A Local Style Dinner will be offered, including Loco Moco and (yes it’s considered “Local”) Corned Beef Cabbage,Various Salads and a Bar.

Dinner will be served from 6:30 and open Mic will start at the same time and conclude at 10:30 PM.

Week 10: Celebrating our 12th Year!

Hauoli La Hanau UFOhana! Yes, this Friday marks our 12th year of our Kanikapila! Hopefully someone will bring some kind of dessert that we can stick a big 1 and 2 in. Btw, we also need some main course dishes so if you could post your incoming rations for Friday that would be greatly appreciated. Just so we don’t end up with 20 desserts!

Mahalo to all of you who stuck with us and to those of you who have joined us recently. Its been an amazing, sometimes bumpy, but mostly smooth ride this past 12 years. But always full of Aloha and good Mana for each other.

Btw, there’s been some confusion about when Kanikapila starts. It’s always been 7:30pm. You can come earlier, but you’ll be put to work cleaning up and setting up the stands and chairs!

As most of you may know, we’re being visited by a BAM (Bay Area Music) video crew for taping. Hope most of you can make it.

Some sad news from Hawaii . . . for those of you who started with us early on, Grandpa, Alex Ngum, passed away about two weeks ago, Monday, February 20th. Grandpa often frequented our Friday Night Kanikapila whenever he town visiting with his Grand Daughter Shawna (pictured below right). Grandpa was loved by all and will forever live in a special place in our hearts.

Well if you checked out Week 8’s update you’d see why the posting was little terse. Mahalo Nui Loa to our Higher Power for keeping everyone safe and that Lucas’ injuries were not life threatening.

TGIaF! Mahalo nui to all of you for your kind thoughts and generosity once again. I’m really amazed at how time after time our Ohana has managed to survive many ‘storms’. Truly a testament to all of you and your ‘Aloha Spirit’, though I’m beginning to think that what ever spirit it is, it’s not just limited to ‘Aloha’. Something above and beyond for sure . . .

Anyway, we soldier on, strumming arm and arm and speaking of arm and arm, or at least strumming . . . some of you may have heard that BAM (Bay Area Music) wants to do a video of us March 9th! So practice up everyone and wear you nicest Aloha Gear. Mahalo to Lopaka for making that connection for us.

ALSO . . . I just got word from Marion that we’ve been invited back to the Marin County Fair this year! Aiiiiieeeeeeee! We’re actually playing on the 4th! Stay tuned for more info.

Return of the Rains (apologies to the Hawaiians about my broken Hawaiian). . . seems like we’re due for another downpour this week. I guess it’s a good thing . . . nice to have breaks of sunshine between it all. Even though it was a working weekend for ‘some of us’. Thankfully we had Friday Kanikapila. Always a treat for all in attendance and especially this past Friday. We were graced with the sounds of some young Kane from Hawai’i. Mahalo to KimoB for making that connection and introducing Ikaika (from Maui), Gavin, and Matt (both from O’ahu) to the UFOhana. I think it’s a Lanikai Soprano. Guess it’s a lot easier to hide behind your back than a dreadnaught guitar?

12 steps for ukers

Do you leave ukuleles all over the house? Do you uke first thing in the morning? At work, with the door closed? What's the longest time period you did not uke? Is it affecting every aspect of your life? Do your friends and family avoid you?

Here are your 12 steps to address your affliction (you might already have started the program):

1) Admit that your life is unmanageable (unless you uke).
2) Believe that a greater power is the only way to restore your sanity (unless you uke).
3) Make the decision to turn your will and your life over to some higher power (such as the uke).
4) Make an inventory of all your musical instruments and sell them all (except the ukes).
5) Admit to all that you uke. (while you uke).
6) Be ready to have your higher power remove all your defects of character. (except your ukeing).
7) Humbly ask your higher power to remove all your shortcomings (except your ukeing).
8) Make a list of all the persons you have harmed and be willing to make amends to them (by ukeing).
9) Make amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure or harm them (oh well, some things just aren't possible).
10) Continue to take that personal inventory (of ukes) and if you counted wrong, admit it only to yourself.
11) Seek through prayer and meditation to improve your ukeing. (Since all those lessons, books, DVDs, workshops, and hours and hours of practice did not help.)
12) Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, try to carry this message to everyone and practice these principles in all our ukeing.

Remember, you can stop ukeing, but you will always be a uker!
