OK, here's the full report on how I bumped into Jake Shimabukuro at The Good Guys in Waikiki.
So we're at Ukulele Ray's House of Wonders, and after Barbara puts up me on YouTube strumming the outrageously tinny Double Neck Soprano/Baritone Lunchbox-a-lele, but she calls me first before she posts it to be sure its ok (it most certainly was). And then Barbara says Hey, you're going to Honolulu, right? And I say, Yeah, and she says, well Al and his wife are there right now, here's his cell phone and hotel" And she says, by the way, go to the Good Guys music shop when you are there its the best place to find out what's happening on the local uke scene and look at some nice ukes...
So I call Al when I get there, and he says, yeah sure, let's go to the Elk's Lodge for dinner -- this is the most spectacular Elks Lodge anywhere, gotta be -- on the beach, open air, and a hunk of roast beast for me that was huge. So Al says, hey, I was perusing the ukes at The Good Guys, you oughta go.
I figured if one more person said "go to the Good Guys," I would spin around thirteen times backwards and disappear in the cloud of Koa smoke.
So nest day, I go to the Good Guys. There are these three guys in there shopping for a Kamaka for one guy, a blond so perfectly surfer looking dude -- he was a classic boy blond fo sure. The other two guys are kinda nondescript Hawaiian looking fellas, and I notice they have some of the new Jake "Gently Weeps" CDs with them, some of them promo copies.
So I says to one guy who is holding the CDs -- are those for sale? (thinking he worked in the shop) and he says, well, I don't know. I says, oh I thought you worked here. Hey, those are promo copies, you work for Jake?
And he says:
"I am Jake."
Whoops.
I go through the embarassed haole boy excuses -- didn't recognize you, only saw you before on the stage, but hey I'm the guy wants to book you for the concert in September 2007 in San Francisco. He says, OK, so you talked to my agent in Tennessee? I say yeah, and then I say, so you remember Del Medina? And then things change (fo da betta, Del!) and He says of course I know Del. And I say I kanikapila at Del's most every friday I can, and he says say hi to Del and Pua and gives me a hug (to transfer to Del and Pua at earliest oppprtunity), and signs one of the promo CDs and that's that. Jake Sighting Par Excellence.
One of the guys he was with was Jimmy Buffett's agent or something (not the surfer dude), and he said "I'm going to S.F. tonite. So I said, hey, go by Del's and Kanikapila -- you'd be welcome for sure and gave him the web site to find the Ohana and Del. He might even show up. He says he has a hot date, and might bring her -- ain't that gonna be a romantic evening, eh? (Come on! It IS romantic, in a wierd ukulele way, no?)

I don't think I've been to the House of Prime Rib since I was 12!!! (And that wasn't just yesterday...) I'm here enjoying the heck out of the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii annual meeting -- you all should see these amazing ukes these folks build over here! Plus, Ohta-San was honored, and honored us with a short concert; I am now a Brittni Paiva fan (wow, can this kid play!), and lots more packed into a weekend of uke heaven...I'll upload more photos when I return mainland side...
